A new survey has found that 6% of Americans think they could fight an unarmed grizzly bear and win.
The results of a new YouGov survey, overall, show that most Americans have a more modest assessment of their skills. In fact, Americans would be the most confident around a domestic rat, goose, or cat.
The investigation involved 34 animals, including humans, in face-to-face confrontations to determine which of the respondents felt to be the fiercest. Elephants and rhinos led with 74 percent, followed by grizzly bears and tigers with 73 and 70 percent, respectively.
Still, 8% of those polled think they could beat a gorilla, while 49% think they could triumph in a battle against a medium-sized dog.
Respondents were asked “which animal do you think would win in a fight” and each saw seven clashes. No animal has been shown more than once, the statement said.

The survey also noted a gender difference in responses. The biggest gap is evident in the number of men – 61% – who expressed confidence that they could win a hand-to-hand fight against a dog. Only 39 percent of the women surveyed said the same thing. Men and women showed similar levels of confidence when it came to a match against an elephant, grizzly bear or rhino.
Meanwhile, 27% of men think they could snatch victory from a king cobra.
“YouGov’s data has already highlighted men’s overconfidence, but there is effectively no gender difference when it comes to this higher level of opponents – men and women are roughly also (unlikely) to think they could beat grizzly bears, lions, gorillas, and crocodiles in battle. Matthew Smith, head of data journalism at YouGov, wrote in the survey findings.
The survey measured responses from 1,224 American adults from April 12 to 13, 2021.
